Goodbye Mr. Stalcup.  Thank you for your care and dedication to so many who have benefited from your gifts of encouragement, discipline, and desire to foster the very best in your students.  May God be with your family, friends and others who are grieving.  Rest in peace, Mr. Ed, for in you God must surely be pleased.

For those of you who would like to attend services for Mr. Stalcup, they are being held on Tuesday, 8/19 at the Northwoods Resort at 4:00PM.

JILL,
Ironically, Cam Ugolini just stopped by my house today. I have not seen him in about 5 years.
He is living in Huntington Beach and I have his phone number if you are interested.

Well...I just heard about Big ED! I just sat with him a month or so ago at the barber while my son Nolan was getting a haircut and Ed was waiting for his. We laughed and talked for a good hour about old times...both in his classroom and on his volleyball court...I really Loved him and loved talking with him...My heart hurts for all of us that will miss him so dearly...To his family...I offer my prayers and I know they know how much he was loved by all,  not only that had him as a teacher but just knew him...He touched a lot of people in this valley and will truly be missed! I know for a while he couldnt play golf due to his back so I'm sure he is having the game  of all games or is throwing the tennis balls for those golden retreivers he loved so much! WE LOVE YOU ED! and To the rest of the Stalcups God Bless!

Oh, Annette, you weren't kidding about Rome. I only had about 22 hours there, but I used some of 'em to run through the city, taking in The Hippodrome, Palatine Hill, Coloseum, and, of course, the piazzas. What an amazingly, astonishingly beautiful place. I can't wait to go back.

My wife Linda and I crashed the 83 reunion after they all got off the boat.

There was a good turnout. Alot of peeps from 85 as well, we had a fun time.

I got drunk.

Linda drove home.

The end.

Alex, you'll LOVE Rome--especially if you're a history buff.  Brad and I traveled Rome, Florence and Venice before we were married.  In fact, he proposed to me on a gondola in Venice.  Definitely walk as much as your feet can handle--that's the best way to see the city.  You'll turn a corner and end up in a grand piazza (square).  And don't miss the Vatican--it's amazing!  Enjoy the pizza, espresso, gelato and of course the wine.  I know pizza was invented in the states, but they have perfected it in Rome.  Have a great time!  Hello to the rest of you too! :)  Summer in Colorado is amazing.  July is the hottest month, so we're on our way towards cooling off and heading into fall.  My brother and his family took a vacation here a few weeks ago and we had a blast.  We did a bunch of the site seeing drives, spent 4th of July in Winter Park and just enjoyed watching our kids engage.  Jim and his wife, Heather, have two teenage daughters (Allison 17, and Laurel 14).  Davis was like a puppy around them.  And they spoiled him to pieces.  Outside of their visit, we've just been enjoying our weekends at the pool, watching Davis play T-ball, playing tennis and just living life.  I hope everyone else out there is having a terrific summer.  I talked to Charlie Arviso last night who said he saw many of you over the weekend at the class of 1983 reunion.  My brother had also mentioning seeing many of you.  I understand their reunion party Saturday night was really cool.  They rented the large party boat and brought in catering.  We're going to look into that for our 25th.  It's a bit more low-key, which is what people seemed interested in for the 25th.  Then maybe another bash for the 30th.  I understand that the boat was pretty affordable too.  We'll keep you all posted.  Love to all! Annette

My vote is for Eric as well.  I think he could buy beer when he was a freshman.

You were lucky you got to push pennies on the nice clean gym floor.  I got to push mine on the metal shop floor which was oh, so sanitary... Good times.  Good times.

Sharon, I'm glad you got in touch with Crystal!  I still have not heard from Devon Burton.  Initially, when we announced the reunion, I was corresponding with Devon fairly regularly.  But when she moved from the east coast to the west, her email address was no longer valid and I've not heard from her since.  I hope she finds her way back to this web site and gets in touch with you.  I hope all is well with you and your family.  And to everyone who keeps the guestbook alive, YOU ROCK!  Love to you all! Isn't the Internet a beautiful thing?  It's so much easier to get and stay connected.  You know what is so cool about this site is that if anyone does a Google search for "Big Bear High School Class of 1985" this site comes up in the #1 spot in the organic search.  So if anyone wants to find our class, it's pretty easy to do.  I hope everyone is doing well.  I was fortunate to have Tina Pivaroff Idler, Lisa Effron, and Pam Robertson Powell out in Colorado last weekend for a girls' weekend at my house.  We had a blast!  My sides are still aching from all the laughter.  Be sure and keep in touch with old friends.  They're priceless!

Ok, this is random but thought I would post it anyway. Is anybody running the Country Music Marathon tomorrow? Since there are over 40,000 runner's, I thought perhaps someone I know would be running it. I'll be running the 1/2 and thought how cool it would be to see an old friend there. I suppose I should have posted this sooner, but didn't think of it til now. So, just in case I forget again, I might as well post it now and ask if anybody will be running the Virginia Beach Rock n Roll 1/2 marathon over Labor Day weekend? Kind of a long shot, but hey you never know. I'll be there running it too. It's not to late to start training. :) A good incentive...your race number gets you in free to the post race concert! WhooHoo!

Thanks for responding!  I do remember you!  In 4th grade, I mostly remember Tim hanging out with Mark McRaven, but I remember you from later years.  After 4th grade I moved to Milpitas for a year, then back to Big Bear for 6th-9th grades.  After Freshman year, I moved to Georgia and graduated from high school there.  Then moved back to Calif to go to UC Davis.

If you go to PHOTO ALBUM  you can see some pictures I have uploaded of our recent storms.
Friday night, Jan 4th, we received about 6 inches of rain and by Saturday afternoon it turned into snow, resulting just under 2 feet.

I will take a put around the lake today and take some more scenic shots to share with you.

It is actually really pretty outside, but would be much more prettier if I was in Tahiti.

One of the things I miss most about Big Bear is the occasional "snow day".  Remember getting those unplanned days off school - with no penalty!  To those of you fortunate enough to live in Big Bear, I hope this current storm drops about 5 feet of snow.  That should be sufficient for an official "snow day"!  On a more serious note, Steven G. Mihaylo was on the front page of the Orange County Register for giving $30 million to Cal State Fullerton.  This was after giving a previous gift of $4.5 million.  Not bad for a BBHS Alumnus.  That is the largest donation in the schools history and makes it one of the largest education donations in the state!  Like many of us he worked his way through Cal State Fullerton working the night shift.

Hi Annette, and everyone. Thanks for the nice post Annette. The only reason we celebrate Xmas is because of our son. Yet, he is now skeptical of Santa, its a joy to watch him open his gifts.

If it was not for him, Linda and I would be on a beach in Maui today, drunk off our asses...................just sayin'

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Hey there guys!

Well we made it to another Christmas Eve.  It's been a glorious season for our family.  Davis is 4 and loving every bit of Christmas.  We've decked the halls, hung the stockings, put up the lights, baked the cookies and now we're just having a fun time tracking Santa at www.noradsanta.org.  If you haven't heard about this and you have little ones who still believe, you've got to check this out.

Colorado is a beautiful.  We're enjoying a white Christmas, but nothing compared to the blizzard of 2006.  We've got an inch or so left on the lawn from the last storm and have a chance of a light snow on Christmas.

We've tried to keep Davis busy the last few days with ice skating and the Denver Zoo lights (they completely light up the Denver Zoo with Christmas lights), visits with friends, etc. Today he's already asking "what exciting thing are we going to do today?" We're going to enjoy the candlelight service at church later this evening, then have dinner with friends.  And then, of course, set out cookies and hot cocoa for the big guy.  Christmas has never been more fun for me.  I love watching the whole thing through Davis' eyes.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you and all of yours.  May you all have a joyous Christmas and may the New Year bring you hope, peace, love and prosperity.

All the best,
Annette

New Update on Charlie posted on News Page of this site 11/15/07.

In a nutshell, he has been moved our of LA County and into Pomona Valley.  He would prefer to have visitors wait until after he's had his next surgery and a few days to recover.  I spoke with Charlie and he asked that I share his sincere thanks for all the support and concern.  He can't wait to see any of you who would like to visit.

I'll be in touch with him and his family over the next few days and will put up a post when he can have visitors.  In the meantime, I've posted the hospital information on the "News" page so you can send a card etc. if you like.

Thanks again to everyone for the words of support and encouragement.  And again, to those who have made donations, your generousity is unbelievable.  We'll keep the donation option online through the end of the month, then send off the donation in the form of a gift card.

You are all amazing!

Love,
Annette

I've posted an update on Charlie in the 'NEWS' section of this web site.

Danny, I can read the yellow just fine as long as I adjust the backlighting on my laptop, sit in a dark closet and squint really, really hard.  I don't mind reconfiguring my monitor, or even sitting in a closet.  But squinting causes wrinkles and that's where I draw the line. :)

Love to all,

News just in....it looks like Charlie is going to be moved from LA County, where he received excellent trauma care, to San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland.  He will likely be transported sometime today.  He will most likely be at San Antonio through his initial recovery, timeframe not yet known.

Thank you to those of you who have already shown your support by making a generous contribution to the Charlie Arviso Recovery Fund.  The biggest hearts I know rest in Big Bear alumni.

If you'd like to get a message to Charlie, feel free to post it here in the guestbook.  I'll be happy to print out the messages and send them along to him.

Christmas, 1980. 7th grade, Mr. GAYnor's class. We had a classroom gift exchange. Names were all thrown in a hat and we all pulled names blindly. I pulled Charlies name, he pulled my name. (what are the chances there)?
Anyhow, I got him a peechee folder and misc shool supplies. He gave me a blue B, our school emblem.
A day I will never forget.
Our thoughts and prayers are with our old buddy Charlie and his family.

Hey all, I see activity on the board. Haven't had the opportunity to provide any update for the fires as I have been out on them since last monday. We started getting the upper hand on the fires around last wednesday and have been making great progress ever since. Much devastation in the areas of running springs and green valley lake. Several pics of our guys fighting fires on the KABC NEWS channel 7 website along with many other local stations. I go back out on the fireline to support some mop up operations tomorrow. Very grateful no fatalities and only a few minor injuries among the firefighters. Thanks for all your support. It's because of the local support is what keeps us going when were beat!!

Hermetology... isn't that the study of crab? Thanks for the advice, Shauna. I shall once again attempt to slip the sulry bonds of earth, and dance the sky on laughter's silver wings... or something to that effect. If you get tired of mai-tai's, btw, try mojitos. Still refreshing, still get you hammered, taste nothing like mai-tais. Keep that palate fresh... ;?)

Have you tried a Bachelor's in Hermetology James?...no speaking to people req. Winning the lottery would be easier but then what? Personally, I can only drink so many Mai Tais on a luxurious white sand beach before I start getting bored with myself...You just gotta get out there and do stuff...create stuff, like your screenplay, then set it free or make it yourself...then, if it's any good, people will be coming to you begging for your genius...that's the theory anyway...still waiting for the begging to happen but I have had a few requests;) Some friends and I made a short film this year that won a couple of minor awards at a film fest...a few great things have come of it...check it out if you like: http://www.dontcallusproductions.blogspot.com/

I've tossed around a bunch of ideas, Shauna. History, PolySci, MFA in screenwriting (even have a screenplay done), MS in National Security Studies, English, Biology, Engineering, blah, blah, blah. I most assuredly don't want to grow up, but to do something fun I need to grow up enough to get the cash to get a degree. Don't know if I could do communications. Too much talking to people and stuff. I do like writing, but with wife and kids and work, etc. it's harder than hell to find the time or energy to get anything down on paper. And then there's the whole schmoozing trying to get your stuff sold (more talking to people). *sigh* winning the lottery would be so much easier...

Great news! I noticed much less air tanker traffice yesterday, but as it was a bit cloudy down here, coulnd't be sure, the Sun confirms it, the fire was 93% contained last night.... and they HAVE been letting fire crews off the line! Chuck, I hope you and your troops get some rest soon.

Good to see people are still participating in the guest book. I'm sorry to hear about the fires as well. I hope everyone in Big Bear fares well. It's fall here in beautiful Colorado. We're still having our share of warm days, but you can definitely feel fall in the air. The leaves are starting to change. Davis is thrilled knowing that in a few more weeks, he'll be jumping in the leaf piles in our yard. My husband is slightly less enthused, as it's quite a chore bagging em up. Since I saw you all at the reunion, not much has changed. Although I am working for a different company. I'm now with ITonCommand. We do fully-outsourced IT in the form of a hosted Windows desktop and network. I'm doing the marketing, which is really exciting, as the company hadn't done any marketing to speak of before hiring me in November. Our web site is www.itoncommand.com if you're interested. Take care everyone. And keep the guest book going. Only 3 years to go until the 25! I hope everyone is still up for it. XXOO Annette

Hey all, I'm working at Tom Bell in Redlands, and have been seeing/hearing the fire fighting airplanes take off and land from San Bernardino Internation Airport (okay, WE remember it as Norton AFB) for the past few days. They have like 10 planes, BIG ones. The last I heard it was burning north west of Fawnskin. there's articles and pictures in the sun : sbsun.com

Yes there is a fire in Big Bear. It is called the "Butler II" fire. It is threatening the fawnskin community which is currently under mandatory evacuation. The fire is estimated at over roughly 15,433 acres with roughly 12% containment. We have approximately 2,245 fire personnel on the lines to suppress this campaign fire. FYI

I just took a look at the latest entries. 40 is good, right? ya all looked great last time I saw you! Hey- Miss Leslie was my favorite teacher in Big Bear! 5th grade was when I moved there and she was my teacher. I sat next to Annette PonTell and we rigged up some compact mirrors on our desks to act as rear-view mirrors to look at Andrew Clausen- who teased me relentlessly- calling me flatlander, and grossing me out with his rendition of The Beatles' "Let it Be"...... that's an icky memory.... I was fascinated with his blue eyes though... ANYWAYS- I will keep up with the fire news and I hope you are all safe and well. Lots of love, Rosie

Hey guys, Good to see the guestbook active again. Tim Kesterson left after 8th grade. He used to "date" Tiffany Able...remember her? Cute little blonde who also left before the end of freshman year I believe. I totally remember Mrs. Gish, but fortunately I got to "admire" her from afar. I was far out in the bungalo with Sharon in Miss Leslie's class. Remember Miss Leslies sweet orange Ford pinto? She actually lived down the street from me accross the street from the Figg's ranch. My guess is that she live with her "partner." It always seemed odd to me to call someone who was 85 by my 5th grade estimation "Miss." I also remember her very bright pink lipstick. My family and I are coming out to CA for a vacation next Friday. We'll be in Big Bear the weekend of 6/29. Hopefully we'll see some friends at the Cardinal bbq. Love to all, Annette

I doubt we'll find Mrs. Gish with a pick and shovel, Danny. I think she still walks the earth, as she did back then, solely by the force of her will and her undead magic powers, like that guy in the Mummy who could turn into a cloud of beetles and stuff. I hold that the woman was pure eeeevil. Or insane. Or both. Alex, the world will one day rue our first meeting, I'm sure. Like Hitler and Mussolini, Marx and Lenin, Hall and Oates, or those two guys from Air Supply, we shall be infamous. Or maybe just like those creepy guys down at the bus station drinking out of paper bags. BTW, let us know how the Wedgie dream turns out, Danny, if you get to see the ending.

Alex, but none the less, your still both 8th graders...LOL I had a strange dream last night. Annette PonTell and Shauna were trying to tackle me and pin me down so they can give me a Melvin/wedgie. The wierd part, is that we were the ages we are now, not school kids. Well, I woke up mad, not mad because they were going to pull my underwear sky high in my ass crack, Mad because I woke up when I should have let them...Could of turned into something very erotic.....LOL Goodnight.

Shauna, I was just in Brisbane on business, but I couldn't quite make it over to NZ. At least I thought of you. On the other hand, I haven't thought of Mrs. Gish since I was 12.
